more in the garden book

I spent a lot of my day today drawing in the Garden Book. A big hole was left in my garden last year when a very old Mulberry Tree came down in a storm. It was such a beautiful tree but I had to respect that it was time for it to go. I really miss that big, gorgeous tree that had a hole in the back of the trunk large enough for a small child to enter!


And since that old tree fell on my lawn furniture and destroyed it, I had to get a couple new chairs this year...


Finally, there is no stopping me or anyone in my family from taking a well-deserved break. Here is son Bill trying out one of the new chairs!!!

saturday's sketches

Today was a day off and I didn't feel like doing any REAL work, so here is what I did - several sketches!! First off are some "roses" made from Hershey kisses. I've had these a while but wouldn't let myself eat them until they were drawn. Now I can have the chocolat!!


And then there is the garage window that I noticed was so overgrown with ivy yesterday. I'd much rather photograph it and draw it than get out there and sweat while trying to tame it!!


And finally, a few more tail lights. I do like these Chrysler models...

I came across a small carnival at the mall Friday evening and couldn't resist this festive carousel. And I was able to keep the sketch a bit loose, which I like. I always seem to work it a bit too much, but I like the free-ness in this one.

Having a flower garden is like watching a constant parade. We've already had the tulips and ajuga of early spring, and now it is time for peonies and oak leaf hydrangea. All eyes go to the West Side of my house at this time of year for the spectacular show.

a garden evening

These days, with the ultra-nice weather, I literally RACE home to find something to draw. This evening, it was all about gardening. First I sat in front of a large double flower pot and recorded what I planted just the other day. It is still a bit sparse at the moment, but hey, easier to draw!! I 'll have to do updates as the plantings mature.


THEN I started my newest moleskine, one devoted to the garden where I live. It has been a lot of work and needs much more, but I'm ready to tackle it again this year. We'll see how it goes!!

bistro

I have coveted a "bistro" set for the past couple years. Sooo European. And actually, the word "bistro" is russian for "hurry, hurry!". But I know that when in Europe, you can sit at one of these small tables facing the street for as long as you like. It is a long long tradition. And now I have a bistro set on my very own front porch. Ooo la la....

Planting Day

I spent a good bit of today planting flowers in my yard and I was aware - every minute - of how fortunate I am. I have disposable income to buy said flowers, I have time off work to plant them, I have free-flowing water to ensure their survival and I have the luxury of sitting around watching them grow. Truly, if you live in the USA, no matter how poor or how you struggle, you are a rich, rich person...

I don't believe I have ever filled up a sketch book before, but this first moleskine has lasted a mere 41 days. WoW!! I am loving this celebration of everyday life and hope to fill up many a moleskine from now on. One a month would be nice...

When the grands come over, they like to check out the sketch book for the latest. Imagine their surprise when they saw a sketch of Colin but not the other two! That just won't do! So we adjourned to the porch with the digital camera, their mama shouting "they aren't cleaned up for photos!!" and snapped some anyway. I like them whatever state they're in...

And I continue to hunt out tail lights. It was easy to get my son and daughter-in-law for this one. I'll probably be able to fill the book just on people I know!! And that just means the tail light project will continue. I see them all day every day!!

a curiosity

there's nothing i love more - or find harder to do - than studies of real people. oh how i wish they would roll off my pen. maybe they would if i did them all the time. hmmm... there's an idea......
